Hakea Seed Pod (Hakea laurina)
900 mm x 870 mm
When I was given some Hakea laurina seed pods by a generous student, I knew that the pods shown here were a perfect subject for a charcoal drawing. The toughness and woodiness of the surface fitted well with the roughness of the charcoal medium. The subject itself was no more than 7cms in width, and to enjoy its complexities, I drew it on a scale of 68 cms across. It is a subject I return to often as it is possible to achieve great dramatic depth within the drawing. This particular Hakea has a beautiful flower and is known as the Pincushion Hakea, perhaps a subject for a later work.
