Banksia Seed Head

Some Banksias do not open to distribute their seeds until they have been through a bush fire. I searched and found seed heads for this commission, however, they were tightly closed. Not wanting to wait for the summer bushfires, I had to find a way of making them open. First, I tried a very hot oven but to no avail. Then the barbecue but this was not hot enough. Finally, they opened after being placed in the centre of a huge garden bonfire. I was exultant with success and as soon as the Banksia Seed Heads were cool enough I began work immediately. The final subject choice was deeply black and very satisfying to draw.
