The Parrot Tulip, such an exotic flower, came about as a result of the Mosaic Virus in the late 19th Century, which was spread amongst the tulip bulbs by aphids. These unusual flowers were prized by growers and buyers alike, their brilliant colours and strange shapes becoming the most sought after bulbs in gardens and tulip fields alike.

The Parrot Tulip painting was an excellent subject for dry brush work. It had to be planned carefully so that each colour was almost separate, but not quite, from the colour beside it so that gentle blending occurred. The early washes established the ground work and then the exacting stripes were laid over the washes layer upon layer with a size 0000 brush. Very little water was used to achieve the final layers of intense colour.
