This is one of my favourite subjects to paint. I grew the beans, expecting to have a huge harvest both for the table and for painting purposes, but the summer in 2013 was so hot and the sun so fierce that it was almost impossible to keep the plants alive. An absence of bees to fertilize the flowers compounded things and I had to paint very quickly before the plants themselves died. The beans are tied not with raffia but with the dying leaves of home-grown garlic which had such wonderful colours. Despite the natural setbacks, it was a heavenly commission and a joy to paint.
