At the outset of this painting, I was puzzled by the decisions I would have to make about the colours to create the Ginger's sheen. Curiously, this plant does not shine. Rather it glows over the whole surface, as if it has been buffed with a cloth. In terms of glow it is more like pewter than silver. What truly fascinated me was the number of colours I needed to mix to create the pale surface appearance.
