Half-finished Cabbage
Cabbages from the garden are giants of the vegetable world and this was such an example. The plan had been to paint the whole surface but as work proceeded, it became clear that a more interesting painting could be created by painting only sections of the cabbage and merely indicating the colours in the outer leaves, with light, clean washes in different hues. The inner leaves of the cabbage were substantially worked, the sculpting achieved with layer upon layer of paint. The solidity of the centre is interesting against the pale washes that extend outwards to the edges of the cabbage. |
