Liquidamber Seed Head
This "ordinary" seed head is indeed extraordinary. Once again an example of the perfection to be found within imperfection. Although most seed pods follow a very defined natural pattern, the joy for the artist is often to be found in the dying subject as the pattern becomes eroded by the buffeting of wind and rain. The browns become more intense and varied, and so an irresistible challenge to draw and paint. What appears to be a plain brown colour on the surface, is in reality a wide palette - the full range of earth colours, in addition to yellows, pinks, purples, blues, and many shades of grey and black. |
